how the 30-year relationship known as Steely Dan started?
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were students of Bard College, New York, in the late 60s. They collaborated and formed Bad Rock Group which included Chevy Chase on drums. In 1970, fresh from college, the young co-writers, backed-up for the Jay and the Americans on tour, under pseudonyms -- Fagen was Tristan Fabriani, and Becker was Gustav Mahler. In 1971, the duo was taken in as staff songwriters for ABC/Dunhill Records in Los Angeles, under the recommendation of aspiring producer Gary Katz.
