Hendrix, who has been referred to as a spaceman, God, and the greatest guitarist of the century, had a mix of Cherokee Indian, African, Mexican, and European blood. Born in 1942, Johnny Allen Hendrix became James Marshall Hendrix in 1946, and Jimi Hendrix in 1966. The band he formed, Jimmy James and the Flames, was originally The Rainflowers. The sleeve of his Electric Ladyland UK release had a picture of him surrounded by naked women, but in the US release, the picture was replaced with a psychedelic graphic. Hendrix was the highest paid ($125,000) performer at the Woodstock festival. During Hendrix's lifetime, he released only five albums. In the twenty years afterwards, more than 300 other titles went public. In 1995, Hendrix's father won a two-year $70 million legal battle for his son's copyrights.
